Prepare Room, Move Furniture
Posted by admin
Most of the information I have seen about painting around furniture while working on your interior house painting project tells you to move all of the furniture to the center of the room. This really is not very helpful. Think about a bedroom or living room. If you move all of the furniture to the middle of the room, you have created a huge obstacle to paint around. Even with the proper extension pole for your paint roller, such an obstacle in the center of the room is hard to work around. it is hard to reach over this obstacle to paint the ceiling.
What Interior House Painting Blog recommends is that you move the furniture away from the walls and arrange it with a few pieces in different areas of the room. This makes it easier to work around. Think of a chain of islands spread around the room rather than a huge continent in the center. Just make sure that you leave enough room between islands and walls to place a ladder next to them.
When moving furniture, practice safe lifting. Be careful not to injure your back. I would strongly suggest you follow this link to a tutorial on safe lifting practices:
http://www.cdc.gov/nasd/docs/d001601-d001700/d001607/d001607.html
When moving furniture, take care not to damage it. Smaller light weight pieces of furniture can be picked up and moved. You may have to slide heavier pieces across the floor. Another thing to be very concerned about is the floor. Be careful not to scratch or cut any wooden or tile floors. Also, something that you may not think of is damage to carpet. Pushing or sliding heavy pieces of furniture across carpets can buckle the carpet, creating “hills and valleys” or lumps in carpet. What you need to do to avoid damage to any type of floor is to put large pieces of cardboard under the furniture and slide the furniture across the cardboard, thus protecting the floor. Visit a retail store to ask for some large, empty cardboard boxes and collapse the boxes to have a nice sheet of cardboard to slide the furniture over. Make sure the cardboard is thick enough, and be sure to remove any staples in the cardboard. Doing this at the beginning of your interior house painting project will avoid any damage to your floors.
You must also be very careful with any electrical outlets or switches in the room. You need to turn off the circuit breakers for the outlets in the room you are working on to avoid shock. Latex paint contains a lot of water, and everyone knows that water conducts electricity. Sometimes you may need to turn off more than one breaker for one room. A foolproof way to see if an outlet is off is to use a circuit tester. Inexpensive circuit testers may be purchased at any hardware store. Circuit testers consist of two wires or bars connected to a sealled light. If you plug the circuit tester into any outlet and it lights up, you will know you were not successful in turning off all electricity to the room you want to paint and you will have to to turn off the right breaker, perhaps several. After all of the electricity in the room is off, it is safe to remover the switch plates and outlet covers so as not to get any paint on them. Place all of the screws in a glass and be sure to place it somewhere that it will not be forgotten or knocked over.
You must cover all of your furniture with drop cloths. For this, use plastic sheets that you can buy at any paint or hardware store. Buy the thicker sheets. The thin sheets of plastic are hard to unfold and also tear easily. There are also drop cloths for your interior house painting job that are paper on one side and plastic on the other. These are also ideal for covering floors. You now know the best and the quickest way to set up a room to begin your interior house painting project.

This is a very helpful post. I also think it is important to also check out your previous post on inspecting the room before anything is moved. As you mentioned, homeowners will check over everything when the job is completed and may find imperfections that had existed before the job was started which may fall onto your company. Very intuitive post.

Good information. Thorough planning and preparation is the key to making a painting job go quickly. Mistakes and messes are the biggest time sink when painting interiors.

Thanks for sharing these tips. The most important is to protect the flooring. Some homes have antique wood floors, and it would be a travesty to scratch or damage them in any way.

All good tips, may I offer another option for faceplates. What we do is remove the faceplate/switchplate put the screw back in the fixture then masking tape the face of the outlet/switch covering it from “roller spray”. This has the added benefit in older homes where all the screws are not of a universal size and speeds up putting it all back together. Yer blog is fine, keep it up.

Right on. It’s easy to jump into a painting project thinking you can just throw some paint on your walls or cabinets. Seems though that about 50% of the work is in preparing things. This can include moving furniture, taping off, removing light fixtures, etc. Great info.

I often find that it’s very interesting on how differing people can check out a room and then determine the various solutions to redecorating and or arranging it. I enjoyed reading your observations and comments and will look forward to applying a number of your suggestions when they are suitable to my circumstance. Disposing of paint is a problem that everyone has had. Perhaps you ordered too much paint and have multiple gallons left over. Or maybe you got the wrong color in the first place. Those unused paint cans sit in a corner in your basement, temporarily forgotten. But over time, as you do more painting projects, this pile of leftover paint tends to grow. Suddenly you have fifteen gallons of paint, most of which are outdated colors. So what do you do with this paint? How do you safely dispose of it?
Four Tips for Disposing of Paint
1. Donate the paint. Donating unwanted paint is the most environmentally friendly way to get rid of it. Common places to donate paint include churches, charities, and non-profit organizations. But if you know of any contractors who do rehabs or turns, they usually love left over paint.
2. Recycle the Paint. Most cities have a drop off for unused paints. Contact your local city hall and they can tell you exactly what to do with the paint. If your paint is oil based, this is your only option other than donating the paint. If you are a contractor or business, cities usually won’t dispose of your paint; you will need to pay a recycling company to dispose of it. Disposing old paint can be rather expensive, costing about $5 a gallon or $10 for a five-gallon bucket of paint.
3. If it is latex, harden the paint and throw it away. You can throw latex paint as long as it is not in liquid form. There are a couple of ways to do this. The longest way is to let it dry out, simply by keeping the lid off and stirring it every couple of days. You could also pour the paint onto a sheet of paper or plastic, little by little, every couple of days. A third way is to add a paint hardener from your local hardware store or stir in saw dust, kitty litter or shredded newspaper. Any of these will help speed up the drying process. To purchase pain hardener, it costs about $2 to harden one gallon of paint.
4. Keep Painting! Mix your colors to come up with a new color and paint that bedroom you have been putting off for the past six months! You can also add colorants to your paints to darken them into new colors. Most paints stores will happily add colorant to your old paint if you bring it back to the store.
What Not To Do With Your Leftover Paint:
* Pour it down the drain or toilet. This will pollute the groundwater and has the potential to clog your drains.
* Throw it in garbage if it is still wet. You will most likely get a fine from your city.
* Pour it outside. This will contaminate the soil and groundwater; not very environmentally friendly.
* Leave sealed cans out in the sun. This can cause a pressure build up in the cans; cause the paint to rot and the can to rust.
Disposing of paint properly is always the right thing to do. Let’s keep the Earth healthy and clean by disposing of old, unwanted paint the right way.

This is the great blog, I think, moving furniture, take care not to damage it. Smaller light weight pieces of furniture can be picked up and moved. You must also be very careful with any electrical outlets or switches in the room. You need to turn off the circuit breakers for the outlets in the room you are working on to avoid shock.
September 6th, 2011 at 4:43 am
Firstly you need to consider where all your furniture will go whilst you are decorating. If your rooms are large enough you will probably be able to move all the furniture into the centre of the room. If your rooms are small, and you won’t have enough room to easily move around, consider moving furniture from one room to another whilst you decorate. If you are planning to redecorate the entire house this will of course be more time consuming, moving your belongings temporay to secure self storage could be the solution.
